Lecture 1: Psychoanalysis as a Treatment for Mental Disorders
From the times of “Anna O.” until today, psychoanalytic treatment has undergone many changes; numerous derivations, schools and sub-fields have emerged, sometimes in stark opposition to other schools.
In the first of a series introducing psychoanalysis by exploring its different facets, we outline the broad psychoanalytic terrain of treatment and briefly indicate the nature of its various strands.
Aleksandar Dimitrijevic is a clinical psychologist, psychoanalyst, and lecturer at International Psychoanalytic University - IPU Berlin.
Lecture 2: Psychoanalysis as a Science
It may justly be said that Freud treated patients primarily to gain insights that would enrich his theoretical work. But, what kind of a science was it that he was developing – natural, hermeneutical, social, historical, archaeological?
In the second lecture introducing psychoanalysis by way of exploring its different facets, we discuss the nature of psychoanalysis-as-science and the problems of scientific definition.
Lecture 3: Psychoanalysis as a Personality Theory
The first comprehensive scientific model of personality was created by Freud. Since its inception, this model has undergone considerable revision by Freud himself and by subsequent analysts - particularly in the domains of object relations theory, self-psychology, and relational psychoanalysis.
In the third lecture of a series exploring psychoanalysis' myriad aspects, we sketch out a broad conception of the psychoanalytic understanding of personality.
Lecture 4: Psychoanalysis as a Developmental Theory
Psychoanalysis has had a tremendous impact on our understanding of development, from infantile sexuality to psychosexual stages to the attachment and narcissism theories.
In the fourth lecture exploring the many faces of psychoanalysis, we consider psychoanalysis as a developmental model.
Lecture 5: Psychoanalysis as an Applied Discipline
It was Freud's constant ambition to not only explain all facets of human culture, but to install a psychoanalytic method at the core of all human sciences. From Freud's initial correspondence with Wilhelm Fliess up to today, psychoanalysts believe they are capable of interpreting arts, society, wars - the gamut of the human experience - through a psychoanalytic lens
In the penultimate talk, we discuss the extrinsic application of psychoanalysis; its extension to the world beyond the clinic.
Lecture 6: Psychoanalysis as a Profession
Most psychoanalysts are organised in institutes, societies and associations, the necessity of which has been continually contested. Indeed, the first of these was founded more than a century ago.
In the final segment of a series introducing the different facets of psychoanalysis, Dr. Dimitrijevic considers the tricky question as to whether psychoanalysts are united as a workers union, scientific association or religious sect?
